American Legion Auxiliary
Girls State is a nonpartisan program that teaches young women
responsible citizenship and love for God and Country. Since the
inception of the Girls State program in 1937, nearly one million
young people have had the opportunity to learn first-hand how their
state and local government works.
High school girls, who have completed
their Junior year, spend an intensive week of study, working
together as self-governing citizens at Auxiliary-sponsored Girls
State programs in every state (with the exception of
Hawaii).
Participants learn how to
participate in the functioning of their state's government in
preparation for their future roles as responsible adult citizens.
Two girls are selected from each Girls State program to attend
Girls Nation, a national government training program. Girls Nation
"senators" meet for a week in Washington, D.C., where they run for
political office, campaign for the passage of legislation and
possibly meet with state Representatives and Senators. Capping off
the week of Girls Nation is oftentimes a meeting with the President
of the United States at the White House.

The Americanism
Youth Conference is a unique program for high school students
(grades 10 - 12) offering a rare opportunity for participation in a
4-day residential program at the Freedoms Foundation in Valley
Forge, Penn. Focused on the discussion of current issues
facing the United States sessions and seminars approach these issues
from a historical and global perspective on constitutional law and
government. The program allows students to explore within
themselves interpersonal skills and leadership potential.
Participation is by invitation only and
based on application and essay.
The Freedoms
Foundation at Valley Forge, founded in 1949, celebrates the United
States Constitution and Bill of Rights and their relevance to our
daily lives. Their goal is to educate and inspire students and
their teachers with the words, meanings and emotions that these
founding documents convey, utilizing interactive programs that
explore our history and debates that focus on Constitutional
concepts in this changing world

Scholarship and a trip to the ALA National Convention
in Phoenix, Arizona (August 2008)
Applicant Requirements:
- Must have earned the Girl Scout Gold award and
have at least Junior standing in High School.
- Must be actively involved in a religious
institution and must have received the appropriate
religious
emblem at the Cadette or Senior Scout level.
- Must have demonstrated practical citizenship in
the religious institution, school, Girl Scouting,
and
community.
- Must submit at least one letter of recommendation
with application from an individual representing one
of the
following: your church, school, community, or scout troop.
- Submit a 500 word essay describing your Gold
Award project. Explain why you chose the project you did and how
it made an impact on you and your community.
The National
President's scholarships are awarded to children of veterans
who served in the Armed Forces during the eligibility dates for The
American Legion. One $2,500 scholarship, one $2,000 scholarship, and
one $1,000 in scholarship money will be awarded in each
division. Ten outstanding students will be awarded a total of
$27,500 to further their higher education. The applicant must
complete fifty (50) hours of community service during his/her high
school years to be eligible for one of these
scholarships.
There will be five scholarships, each in the amount
of $1000, awarded in the 2007-2008 administrative year. One $1000
scholarship will be awarded in each division of the American Legion
Auxiliary.
Applicant must be a member of The American Legion,
Auxiliary, or Sons of The American Legion and shall have paid dues
for the two preceding years and for the calendar year in which
application is made.
The applicant also must be a student who has had at
least one year of college and is in need of financial assistance to
pursue an undergraduate degree.
One Junior member
in each division will receive a scholarship valued at $1,000 per
year for four years (total $4,000). The applicant must have held
membership in the American Legion Auxiliary for the immediate past
three years, currently hold a 2008 membership card, and continue to
maintain her membership throughout the four-year scholarship
period.
Samsung, a
worldwide leader in electronics, endowed a scholarship fund of five
million dollars to be administered by The American Legion. The
endowment was made to show appreciation to U.S. veterans who came to
the aid of Korea during its struggle against communist forces during
the Korean War. “The Samsung American Legion Scholarship Program”
established a series of scholarships derived from interest and other
income from the $5,000,000 principal amount. In 2003, seven $20,000
scholarships and 91 $1,000 scholarships were awarded.
Eligibility:
High school juniors who participate in and complete
either an American Legion Boys State or American Legion Auxiliary
Girls State Program and be a direct descendant, i.e. child,
grandchild, great grandchild, etc. or a legally adopted child, of a
U.S. wartime veteran who served on active duty during one or more of
the periods of war officially designated as eligibility dates for
membership in The American Legion by the United States government:
WW I -- April 6, 1917 - November 11, 1918; WW II -- December 7, 1941
- December 31, 1946; Korean War -- June 25, 1950 - January 31, 1955;
Vietnam War -- February 28, 1961 - May 7, 1975; Lebanon and Grenada
-- August 24, 1982 - July 31, 1984; Panama -- December 20, 1989 -
January 31, 1990 and Persian Gulf War -- August 2, 1990 to cessation
of hostilities as determined by the United States
government.
Scholarship:
The scholarship is for undergraduate study only and
may be used for: tuition, books, fees, and room and board. The
selection of the scholarship winners will be based, in part, upon
the following criteria: academic record; involvement in school
activities; involvement in community activities; community service;
financial need and additional bonus points in the selection process
will be awarded to descendants of U.S. veterans of the Korean
War.
