Operation Military Kids held a camp for children of deployed military members.  The Camp was held at Camp Ocala, located in the Ocala National Forest, June 23-27, 2008.  The camp is for children ages 8-13 years.  With the sponsorship of 4th District Posts, Auxiliary Units, Squadrons and Legion Riders Chapters they were able to hold the camp for 100 children.  Operation Military Kids offered partial scholarships to families on a needed basis.  Scholarships ranged from $50.00 to $100.00 with the participants paying at least $50.00 towards the great experience.  Having a scholarship fund of $1000-$3000 enabled from 10-30 youths attend camp.

Thanks to the 4TH District support of "Operation Military Kids" as it made it a big sucess this year. The Department of Florida American Legion Children & Youth Chairman Peggy Hearlson did an outstanding job coordinating this event.

From Left: Jim Ramos, American Legion Department of Florida District #4 Commander, Lauren Hlubny of Trinity Catholic High School; Keith Clark of Citrus High School, Amanda Lowery of Lake Weir High School and Phil Hearlson, American Legion Department of Florida Northern Area Commander.

The American Legion has been running its Oratorical Contests in Area High Schools since 1938. On Saturday, January 19, 2008 American Legion Post # 155 hosted The American Legion Department of Florida, District #4 Oratorical Contest at its Post.

High School students from six neighboring Counties representing 19 American Legion Posts and more than 35 High Schools and even home schooled students squared off on an oration of the Constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights. There were three outstanding contestants in Lauren Hlubny of Trinity Catholic School from Ocala, FL; Keith Clark from Citrus High School from Inverness, FL and Amanda Lowery of Lake Weir High School from Ocala, FL.

All High School students - either public, private, or home schooled - were eligible to enter the contest. Scholarships will be awarded to the winning contestants ranging from $100 to $18,000, depending on how high in the competition they go. The contest consisted of an eight to 10 minute prepared oration on some phase of the Constitution of The United States and a three to five minute assigned topic discourse on a particular article or amendment.

The purpose of The American Legion’s High School Oratorical Contest is to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the Constitution of the United States on the part of High School students. Other objectives of the contest include the development of leadership qualities, the ability to think and speak clearly and intelligently, and the preparation for acceptance of the duties and responsibilities, the rights and privileges of American citizenship.

During the competition each student went by a number not name so the judges didn’t know their name or where they came from so everyone was on an equal playing field. The judges Mrs. Vicky Iozzia and Mr. John Ryan has nothing to do with the American Legion or any of the area High Schools but are professional speakers and are from the local Toastmasters association in Citrus County.

All three students showed exemplary knowledge on the Constitution of the United States, each article and all amendments. As in all competitions there can be only one winner and this years American Legion District #4 winner is Lauren Hlubny of Trinity Catholic School from Ocala, FL with Keith Clark from Citrus High School from Inverness, FL coming in second place.

Lauren Hlubny only a 10th grader will go on to compete further in the American Legion Oratorical Contest program and stands a chance of winning up to $18,000 in Scholarship awards. After the contest all three contestants received Scholarship awards from American Legion Department of Florida District #4 Commander Jim Ramos for their participation and outstanding knowledge on the Constitution.

Local Toastmasters Mrs. Vicky Iozzia and Mr. John Ryan also critiqued each participant on their performance and what they did good and what they can do better themselves the next time they are speaking in front of a crowd.
